Kenneth “Buss” M. Fear was born on the family ranch in Big Piney. He graduated from Big Piney High School and married his sweetheart, Mardell Bennett, in 1938. Soon after, the young couple moved to the cookhouse on the family ranch; they lived on the ranch until retiring and moving to Marbleton in 1988. Buss managed the ranch for several years, buying additional property and expanding the ranching business. Buss was the boss of the wild horse gathers from the desert south of the home ranch. He would bring some of the best saddle horse prospects home and spend the winter breaking them. It was a familiar sight to see him with the team and sled heading out to feed the cattle with a couple of horses tied to the back. In addition to being an outstanding horseman, handling a rope was second nature. Besides doctoring and branding, and roping, he participated in and produced rodeos for several years. He encouraged his own children and grandchildren to ride, rope, and compete at a very early age.
